Nepal has won this year’s U-23 Bagabandhu
Gold Cup by seeing off Behrain in the final. But it was Nepal who turned out victorious as they crashed Behrain with three whooping goals. This win has made a
mark in the history with the win as it was the first time Nepal has won a major
competition in 23 years.
Nepal found the net early on through Bimal
Gharti Magar’s brilliant opener early on 5th minute. Nepal played some fooball
while Behrain players were frustrated and were making ruthless tackles on
Nepali players. Behrain tested Nepal few times but goalkeeper Bikesh Kuthu impressed
the audience with some world class saves. Later on, young player Anjan Bista shows
some brilliant spirit and skill to set up Bishal Rai inside the box which he
converts it clinically to give Nepal a two goal lead on 87th minute.
Two goal lead turned out to be twice as better as one goal lead as it lifted the spirit of Nepali team. Nawayug Shrestha scored once again at stoppage time as he
collected and converted Bimal Gharti magar’s fine cross to triple the tally.Nepal not only scored three fine goals but also kept clean sheet to deny Behrain any hopes of compensation.
Nepal won US$ 50,000 for winning the competition while Behrain bagged US$ 25,000 as runner ups. Nawayug Shrestha was named the highest goalscorer and the best player of the tournament with four goals to his name.

Amid heavy
criticism due to lack of quality and woeful scandals Nepali football had been facing, the win surely lifts the
pressure off the players and the coach, and gives something real to celebrate
for the Nepali football fans this time. Nepal’s
last international title in foreign soil came back in 1993 when they defeated
India 4-3 in penalties after a 2-2 stalemate during the South Asian Games final
in Dhaka.
The string of impressive
displays on top of the win gives something to cherish for and along with new
hope and confidence to Nepali Football. This might just be the turning point in
Nepali Football which sparks the new beginning in Nepali football.
Congratulations to Nepali football team for
becoming the champions.
