Traditional Musical Instruments in NEPAL


Music is unavoidable in any culture. And  Nepali culture, being so rich in festivals and cultural diversity can not stay aloof and forlorn  from the music/ musical instruments. And the effects they have in   our life- personal as well as social, is amazing.

Music contains our life from birth of a baby to the very end of a man. Each culture custom has its relationship with music, song, dance and musical instruments. Musical instruments have different variety and types according to the places, communities, festivals and religions.
Varieties of music is played all across from Mountain to Hill and Hill to Madesh. There are many folk instruments created and played here in Nepal. We can proudly claim to have more than around 200 unique instruments in Nepal, which are made locally in our communities.

Panchai Baja is one of the renowned musical instruments in Nepal. The vast majority of the instruments created in Nepal are yet being utilized by Newar Community.
Along with folk songs, various musical instruments are also played in different festivals, jatras, and ceremonies in Nepal. Like songs, musical instruments also differ according to place, race, religion and culture. A brief introduction of musical instruments played in Nepal are given below:


Madal


It is the most famous folk musical instrument in Nepal.It was first introduced by Magar community.It is a wooden hollow tube with skin stretched over both of the ends.It is played like a drum by beating both hands at its end. When Madal is played along nepali folk song nobody can stand still.





 Sarangee
Sarangee is similar to famous music instrument  Violin in western culture.It is made of wooden piece with hollow bottom and four pieces of strings are fastened tightly with four wooden nails fixed on the top of it.It is played by rubbing on a group of strings especially left and right repeatedly with a small stick, which is fastened with some strings.It is especially played by Gandharva community.In past they used to show their talents by playing sarangee and earn money.


Basuri and Murali

  This instruments are famous among whole hindu culture as it was the instrument played by lord "krishna".These are made on pieces of bamboo by making six holes in it.These holes represents the six different musical notes.They are played by blowing air through mouth.Both of the instrument are similar in nature and also produdes similar sound. But the main differences is it's playing postition that Murali is played like flute/trumpet holding by lips and slops downwards whereas the Basuri is kept horizontally.


Panchai baja
The meaning of word "Panchai baja" is "five musical instruments". It is called so as it is group of five musical instrument playing together.These five instruments are:



Jhyamta/Jhurma :
It is one of the Panchhai Baja. It is several flat round dish-such as musical instrument made of metal or bronze, played by beating on one another.



Narsingha:  Narasingha is long and carved like a half circle.It is made of two pieces curved copper tube that is played by blowing air through its mouthpiece.

Nagara/Damaha:  It is made of leather stretched over an end of a hollow copper bowl played by hitting with hands or sticks.

Sanai:  It is made of a metal shaped like a pipe slightly bent forward has couple of holes, reed on the top that you blow into.

Tyamko: It is similar to Nagara but comparibly small in size.It is played by two pieces of sticks called Gajo.


 Tungna

It is one of the famous musical instrument in mountain regions of nepal.It is made on the wooden piece of rhododentron by fastening strings as in Sarangi.
                                                                                      
                                                            Damphu

It is a popular musical instrument among Tamang community of nepal.It looks like a small drum and made of hollow wood stretched by leather over one edge.




Dhyangro

It is a kind of drum made of empty wood by extending calfskin both of its edges and played with a bended stick called Gajo. It is exceptionally utilized by faith healers (Dhami/Jhakri) on the event of worshiping or treating individuals. This is a traditional medical treatments prevailing in Nepal.




Dhol and Dholak
It is similar to the madal. it is made of a hollow wooden tube by stretching leather over both of the edges and played with hands. It is especially played by Madhesi community and played throughout Nepal in holi festival.

Music is what gives strength and joy to live, and makes Homo Sapiens more of a social animal by uniting poeple through music. It has mind pleasing effect like nothing else.Where words fail music prevails and when music prevails the whole world rocks!!
