Nepali flag is different from flags of other nations
of the world. All nations of the world has rectangular or square shaped flag,
but Nepal’s national flag is triangular, the only one of its kind in the world.
The national flag of Nepal is special because it
represents the nature of the country and its fellow citizens. The flag is red
in color with blue borders around the two adjacent right triangles. The upper
triangle is relatively smaller than the lower triangle and consists of white moon
at its centroid. The lower triangle is slightly bigger than the upper triangle
and encompasses sun (with 12 points) in white color.
The combinations of two triangles symbolize the Himalaya
Mountains. The moon is the symbol of peaceful and serene weather of hills and
mountains while the moon symbolizes the hot climate of terai region of the
country.
Some historians also claim that the blue signifies veins, hence the blue around red, veins carrying blood. Until 1962, the Nepali flag’s emblems, the sun and the crescent moon, had human faces signifying monarchy. The curved moon on the flag is a symbol of the peaceful and calm nature of Nepalese people, while the sun represents the aggressiveness of Nepalese warriors, known worldwide as the brave Gurkhas. The faces remained on the sun and the moon on the Royal Standard until the abolition of the monarchy in 2008.The picture of sun and moon conveys yet stronger meaning to Nepalese
people. It means to them that Nepal and Nepali people will endure in this world
as long as the sun and moon lasts.
The national flag also plays a source of
encouragement for Nepalese people as the red color represents victory and
bravery, and blue color represents peace and harmony.
This small flag, composed of two pennons, has been given a very clear definition as to what we are supposed to see, and be reminded of, when we see the flag. Like soldiers at the forefront of a battle, it serves as piece of respect for those who have served to make this country.
The triangular shaped
flag was adopted as the national flag of Nepal in December 16, 1962 and it
still remains the national flag of the sovereign Nation.
